Vitamin K2 is best known for helping with blood and bone health, but new research points to an unexpected role: protecting the brain and supporting cognitive function.

Vitamin K2 acts as an activator for specific proteins involved in vital body functions, particularly in blood regulation and bone metabolism. But recent findings indicate it may also contribute to neurological balance and protection. Beyond its established roles, K2 appears to support brain cell stability and may even help defend against age-related cognitive decline.

What makes K2 especially intriguing is its apparent influence on epigenetic mechanisms — the biological processes that control how genes are expressed without altering the DNA itself. It seems capable of modulating gene activity through pathways like DNA methylation, histone modification, and microRNA regulation. This kind of control could help counteract the molecular dysfunctions seen in diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

All signs point to K2 as a promising yet underexplored ally in the fight against neurodegenerative disorders. While more focused research is still needed, the potential is striking. With deeper investigation, vitamin K2 could emerge as a valuable tool in developing strategies to preserve brain function and slow cognitive decline.

Nutrients published a new post-hoc analysis of the 1-year MenaQ7 cardiovascular study, examining an underrepresented population and demonstrating a promotion of healthy blood pressure through a reduction in vascular stiffness.

A new post-hoc analysis of a 1-year cardiovascular study on the vitamin K2 supplement MenaQ7® has uncovered promising findings for women’s heart health. The study, published in the journal Nutrients, specifically examined the effects of vitamin K2 MK-7 supplementation on vascular stiffness and blood pressure in pre-, peri-, and post-menopausal women with low vitamin K status.

The results showed that for post-menopausal women with high baseline vascular stiffness, vitamin K2 MK-7 supplementation significantly improved vascular flexibility and reduced blood pressure in the brachial and carotid arteries. In contrast, post-menopausal women in the placebo group with high baseline stiffness exhibited increased blood pressure. These findings suggest vitamin K2 MK-7 may be an effective intervention for mitigating the negative cardiovascular effects that can occur with menopause.

Importantly, the researchers note that the benefits of vitamin K2 MK-7 were not uniform across all participants. Those with elevated arterial stiffness experienced the greatest improvements, underscoring the importance of personalized approaches to cardiovascular health. These new insights build on previous clinical trials demonstrating the vascular health benefits of MenaQ7® vitamin K2, further validating its potential as a targeted supplement for supporting women’s heart health, particularly during the menopausal transition.

Vitamin K2: Essential for Children’s Healthy Growth

A recent study has emphasized the significant role of Vitamin K2 in supporting height development in children.

A recent study has emphasized the significant role of Vitamin K2 in supporting height development in children.

Understanding the Role of Vitamin K2 in Growth Development

The findings revealed that children with short stature had notably lower levels of Vitamin K2, with a deficiency increasing the likelihood of growth impairment by more than 50%.

Additionally, vitamin K2 levels were observed to decline with age in children between 2 and 15 years. These results highlight the necessity of maintaining adequate vitamin K2 intake to support optimal growth.

The Importance of Vitamin K2 in Bone Health

Essential nutrients primarily influence bone growth in children, and vitamin K2 plays a crucial role in this process. Traditionally recognized for its role in blood clotting, Vitamin K2 has gained recognition for its contribution to bone mineralization and overall skeletal strength. Studies from Maastricht University have shown that children have a high demand for vitamin K2, as indicated by increased levels of inactive osteocalcin—a key bone marker. The modern diet, however, has seen a significant decline in vitamin K2 intake since the 1950s, potentially leading to long-term health consequences.

Ensuring Adequate Vitamin K2 Intake for Growth Support

Maintaining optimal Vitamin K2 levels is essential for promoting healthy growth and development in children. Supplementing with MenaQ7®, the most clinically studied Vitamin K2 as MK-7, can help counteract deficiencies and support bone health. Beyond bone growth, vitamin K2 also plays a vital role in cognitive function and vascular health, further reinforcing its importance in a child’s diet. Ongoing research, including studies conducted in 2025, confirms the link between vitamin K2 and height development. Ensuring sufficient intake of this essential nutrient should be a priority for both parents and healthcare providers.

World Kidney Day is a great opportunity to share promising findings. A collaborative study by Gnosis by Lesaffre and Omicron Pharmaceuticals indicated that Vitamin K2 supplementation with MenaQ7® may alleviate symptoms in individuals with severe calciphylaxis, a condition associated with poor kidney function.

Collaboration on a Case Study

Gnosis by Lesaffre, in partnership with Omicron Pharmaceuticals, has published a case study exploring the benefits of MenaQ7® Vitamin K2 as MK-7 supplementation for an individual with calciphylaxis, a condition related to poor kidney function. The study – “Exploring Novel Therapeutic Strategies for Calciphylaxis: A Focus on Vitamin K2 Supplementation” – was published in the Annals of Urology & Nephrology.

The Importance of Vitamin K2 for Kidney Health

Vitamin K deficiency is a significant risk factor for overall and cardiovascular mortality in individuals with kidney conditions. The vitamin K-dependent protein, Matrix Gla Protein (MGP), is known to inhibit calcification when activated. Previous research has shown that in those on dialysis, a slight decrease in active MGP significantly increased the risk of calciphylaxis, suggesting an association between K deficiency and the condition.

Promising Results in Calciphylaxis Management

In a recent case study, an individual experiencing severe symptoms of calciphylaxis reported significant improvements after supplementing with Vitamin K2 (MenaQ7®) at a dosage of 360 mcg per day. After one month of treatment, the individual noted that the pain had vanished, and the wounds began to heal, with complete healing achieved by the third month. The authors of the study suggest that Vitamin K2 supplementation may prove to be a promising therapy for managing calciphylaxis in patients undergoing dialysis. Ongoing research, such as the VIKIPEDIA study, is currently investigating the effects of higher dosages of MenaQ7® (1,000 mcg per day) to address potential deficiency levels.

Optimal Vitamin K2 Dosages for Kidney Health

Researchers are currently investigating the optimal dosage of K2 for kidney patients. Ongoing randomized controlled trials, such as the VIKIPEDIA study, are examining the effects of higher dosages of MenaQ7® (1,000 mcg/day) to address deficiency levels.

Improving Blood Pressure and Vascular Health
with Vitamin K2

In honor of Heart Month, it’s essential to address the impact of arterial stiffness and high blood pressure on cardiovascular health. Vitamin K2, especially MenaQ7®, helps improve arterial elasticity and blood flow, promoting better heart health.

In honor of Heart Month, it’s essential to address the impact of arterial stiffness and high blood pressure on cardiovascular health. Vitamin K2, especially MenaQ7®, helps improve arterial elasticity and blood flow, promoting better heart health.

As we age, a harmful cycle of increasing arterial stiffness and rising blood pressure can place significant strain on the heart and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Arterial stiffness leads to higher blood pressure, which in turn causes more stress on the heart, perpetuating the cycle. Breaking this pattern is essential for maintaining vascular health, and one effective way to do so is by improving arterial elasticity, which helps regulate blood pressure and reduce cardiovascular risks.

Vitamin K2 is crucial in supporting arterial health by improving several key parameters. It activates Matrix GLA Protein (MGP), a potent inhibitor of vascular calcification, which helps maintain arterial elasticity. Additionally, vitamin K2 reduces oxidative stress and inflammation, two factors that accelerate the aging process of the vascular system. By enhancing endothelial function, vitamin K2 also helps blood vessels regulate blood flow, maintain stable blood pressure, and prevent clotting, contributing to overall cardiovascular wellness.

Clinical studies on MenaQ7® (180 μg/day) highlight its significant impact on vascular health. In postmenopausal women, MenaQ7® was shown to reduce arterial stiffness and activate MGP, improving arterial elasticity. It also enhanced arterial elasticity in adults with low vitamin K status, showing benefits in a short period. Furthermore, MenaQ7® has been proven to reduce blood pressure and improve arterial elasticity in women with high baseline stiffness. Given these findings, MenaQ7® is an effective option for supporting healthy blood pressure and improving cardiovascular health, especially for those with compromised arterial elasticity or low vitamin K levels.
