Association of Active Folate and Vitamin K2:
A New Approach to Bone Health

Bone health is about more than just calcium; recent research suggests that other nutrients play equally crucial roles. Understanding the association between these nutrients can offer new strategies for promoting bone health.

Bone health is about more than just calcium; recent research suggests that other nutrients play equally crucial roles. Understanding the association between these nutrients can offer new strategies for promoting bone health.

Recent research has brought a new player into the conversation around bone health density: Folate, or vitamin B9. While Vitamin K2 MK7 is well known for its essential role in maintaining strong bones, particularly in its ability to regulate calcium and support bone mineral density, the benefits of folate are now emerging as another vital nutrient. A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that folate health benefits may include a reduced risk of compromised bone health in older women. The research found that those with higher folate levels had a reduced risk of developing osteoporosis compared to those with lower levels. Researchers believe this effect is linked to active folate‘s ability to reduce homocysteine levels, an amino acid associated with bone density loss, and an increased risk of fractures.

Vitamin K2 is well-known for directing calcium to the bones and teeth while stopping it from depositing in arteries and other tissues, which could otherwise increase cardiovascular risk. It works synergistically with vitamin D to promote bone health. However, the new findings suggest adequate Folate intake could enhance Vitamin K2’s bone-protective role. This revelation is particularly significant as it broadens the understanding of bone health, suggesting that a multi-nutrient approach, including Vitamin K2 and Active Folate, could be more effective in protecting bone health.

Given the increasing prevalence of osteoporosis, especially among aging populations, this research underscores the importance of a balanced diet rich in folate and K2 benefits, alongside other key nutrients like calcium salt and vitamin D, to support bone health density.

The choice of Vitamin K2 and Active Folate is crucial in ensuring the quality and effectiveness of bone health supplements. To guarantee bone health benefits, selecting clinically proven and high-quality forms of these nutrients is essential.

MenaQ7® and Quatrefolic® are leading choices in this regard. They offer the reliable efficacy needed to support bone health through scientifically backed ingredients.

Vitamin K2: Debunking Myths and Understanding Benefits

Vitamin K2, particularly in the form of MenaQ7®, has garnered attention for its potential health benefits and role in blood coagulation. Contrary to popular misconceptions, recent studies, including one published in the Journal of Renal Nutrition, indicate that vitamin K2, specifically MK7, does not significantly influence the risk of thrombosis or blood clots.

The Journal of Renal Nutrition study elucidates that vitamin K2 is crucial for activating proteins that regulate blood clotting but does not inherently increase the risk of thrombotic events. This finding is pivotal in debunking the myth that vitamin K2 intake, whether through diet or supplements, poses a significant risk of thrombosis. MenaQ7®, a well-studied form of vitamin K2 MK7, has been shown to be safe, with minimal side effects reported, further reinforcing its role in promoting cardiovascular health without adverse effects on blood clotting.
In addition to clarifying its impact on blood coagulation, vitamin K2 has numerous benefits that extend beyond clot inhibition. It plays an essential role in calcium metabolism, helping to maintain bone density and promote cardiovascular health. The precise mechanism involves directing calcium to bones and teeth while stopping its deposition in arteries and soft tissues, thus mitigating the risk of arterial calcification. This dual action underscores the importance of vitamin K2 in overall health, especially in aging populations prone to compromised bone and cardiovascular health.

Beyond regulating calcium metabolism, multiple new mechanisms of action have recently been discovered, including anti-inflammatory effects and support for mitochondrial function.

Understanding vitamin K2 and its multifaceted benefits can dispel lingering fears about its use. Further, multiple MenaQ7®-specific clinical studies—conducted with child and adult populations—have proven its safety and demonstrated no procoagulant effects. By emphasizing the safety and efficacy of MenaQ7®, health professionals and consumers can make informed decisions about incorporating vitamin K2 MK7 into their health regimens, ensuring optimal benefits without unnecessary concern over blood coagulation issues.

Vitamin K2 and its Variants

Vitamin K2, particularly menaquinone-7 (vitamin K2 MK-7), plays a vital role in promoting bone and cardiovascular health. Vitamin K2 MK-7 activates osteocalcin, facilitating the binding of calcium to bones and thus improving bone mineral density. Additionally, Vitamin K2 MK-7 supports cardiovascular health by activating matrix Gla protein (MGP), which helps stop calcium from depositing in arteries and soft tissues, thereby lowering the risk of cardiovascular issues and enhancing blood flow.

Sources of Vitamin K2

Vitamin K2 can be derived either from natural fermentation or through chemical synthesis. The fermentation process, which produces vitamin K2 MK-7, yields a highly effective form of Vitamin K2. Due to the limited dietary sources of K2 in food, achieving adequate intake from diet alone is challenging. Therefore, supplementation is often necessary to meet daily requirements and address K2 deficiency.

Natural Fermentation vs. Synthesis

Vitamin K2 obtained through natural fermentation involves the use of microorganisms such as Bacillus subtilis, resulting in a superior form of Vitamin K2 MK-7. Conversely, synthetic Vitamin K2 is produced via chemical processes and typically contains a higher proportion of the less effective cis isomer. This distinction is critical for individuals seeking the full health benefits of K2.

Isomeric Purity of MK-7

Vitamin K2 MK-7 exists in both trans and cis isomers, with the trans form being the bioactive version necessary for health benefits of K2. High-quality MK-7 supplements produced through natural fermentation typically have over 99% isomeric purity, indicating a dominance of the trans form. Synthetic MK-7, on the other hand, may contain a higher percentage of cis isomers, making natural fermentation the preferred method for obtaining effective vitamin K2.
