This post highlights opportunities for brand owners based on key consumer trends for 2024. It is all about finding the optimal ingredient setting your product apart from the competition. We believe MenaQ7® is such an optimal ingredient.

Consumers prioritize ingredients for better value

According to Innova Market Insights “Ingredients Taking the Spotlight”, is at the top of their identified consumer trend of 2024. In other words, the hero of the product is the ingredients within it. Consumers look for value in the ingredients within the product and one-third of consumers report looking at the ingredients of interest on the product packaging.

Despite the cost-of-living crisis, FMCG Gurus also highlights value as a key trend with consumers. Specifically, consumers seek value in the form of efficacy, quality, and convenience. They ask questions like; does the product serve my needs, is efficacy-proven, is it trustworthy and is the dose form appealing? A key takeaway from FMCG Gurus is that value is more important to consumers than the lowest price, and brands should focus on innovation rather than being a cheaper “me-too” product.

Consumers Prioritize Prevention and Look for Clinically Proven Ingredients

According to Innova Market 1 in 3 global consumers report being more proactive when it comes to their health and prioritize a strategy of prevention when it comes to their physical health. When asked what their major concerns related to physical health are, the response was 1: Weight Management 2: Heart Health 3: Bone and Joint Health.

As consumers are getting more educated, higher inspection of your product is taking place. Consumers expect evidence and proof of the efficacy relating to the claims attached to a product. Brand owners who can provide evidence and documentation as part of their product information will be in a stronger position to build trust with consumers. Choosing branded ingredients with clinical documentation is crucial in meeting this demand.

Natural Ingredients and Sustainability

Beyond proven and science-backed claims, consumers are still looking for natural ingredients that are free from artificial additives, preservatives, and chemicals. Consumers are increasingly conscious of the impact of their choices on personal health and the environment. Features like Organic and non-GMO are often associated with a holistic approach to health and well-being, resonating with consumers seeking a more natural and integrated approach to their health.  FMCG Gurus highlights a growing focus on ingredient transparency, where consumers are increasingly attentive to product labels and seeking healthy, clean, and recognizable ingredients.

An epidemiological study has revealed an increase in bone mineral density in women and men over 60 in less than one decade.

A new published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research has yielded findings demonstrating that continued education and encouragement about dietary supplement consumption works! The authors analyzed data from one of the longest-running epidemiological studies into osteoporosis – the Dubbo Osteoporosis Epidemiology Study (DOES). This study includes more than 3,000 adults 60 and older who were tracked for several years in two time sets: 1988-1992 and 1999-2001.

The results showed a dramatic difference in bone health between the two cohorts. The latter group showed a 3% increase in bone mineral density from the previous cohort. And the latter group had a 45% reduction in hip fractures. This improved bone mineral density status reflects a more proactive mindset to utilize available tools and lifestyle adaptation to protect bone health during aging. Since 2013, one tool has gained tremendous global awareness – Vitamin K2 as MK-7 (as MenaQ7®).

The DOES substantiates a landmark three-year study in healthy menopausal women who consumed 180 mcg MenaQ7 or placebo daily. Results were remarkable: the researchers found a statistically significant reduction in the rate at which age-related bone mineral density and content were lost in femoral neck (hip) and lumbar spine.

Taken together, the 2013 study and the epidemiological findings create a powerful case for K2 to be a required nutrient to support bone health.

New MenaQ7® Evidence Presented at the ESC Congress; further Solidifies Cardiovascular Benefits

Once again MenaQ7® is leading the efforts to validate the benefits of Vitamin K2 as MK-7 to support cardiovascular health. Once again MenaQ7® is leading the efforts to validate the benefits of Vitamin K2 as MK-7 to support cardiovascular health. At the prestigious European Society of Cardiology Congress, PhD student from CARIM School for Cardiovascular Diseases at Maastricht University, Femke de Vries, presented an abstract from a post-hoc analysis of the previously published 1-year MenaQ7 cardiovascular study. The presentation sparked a lot of discussion about the publication of the post-hoc analysis expected later this year.

In the post-hoc analysis, the authors aimed to examine how supplementation of Vitamin K2 as MK-7 affected vascular stiffness in women going through pre-, peri-, and post-menopausal stages. The trial included 166 women (age 40-70 with low K2 status) who consumed 180 mcg MK-7 daily or placebo for one year.

Much-Needed Research on Heart Health in Women

Research on this specific demographic is critical. While cardiovascular disease has been considered a “man’s disease,” it is still the major cause of death in women over the age of 65, and research has been underrepresented.

The findings presented via the poster named “Beneficial Effects of One-Year Supplementation with Menaquinone-7 on Vascular Health and Blood Pressure in Post-Menopausal Women,” confirm a correlation between hormonal changes and their impact on the vasculature.

Post-menopausal women may experience heightened vascular stiffness, which can manifest as functional vascular damage. Arterial stiffness is a significant indicator of cardiovascular health, particularly in relation to blood pressure. Interestingly, it seems that enhancing one’s K2 status may positively influence both.

The abstract has been published in the European Heart Journal and is available on ESC 365, the cardiology knowledge hub. The post-hoc analysis will be published in a peer-reviewed journal later this year.

The global concern surrounding cardiovascular health continues to grow, prompting many of us to explore the supportive benefits offered by dietary supplementation. In recent years, researchers have placed a significant emphasis on understanding the role of arterial stiffness in cardiovascular health. Additionally, they have made groundbreaking discoveries regarding the vitamin K-dependent protein Matrix Gla Protein (MGP). Through its many clinical trials, MenaQ7® is the vitamin K2 brand shown to effectively activate this critical cardio-supporting protein.

Vitamin K2 and Matrix Gla Protein (MGP)

Matrix Gla Protein (MGP) stands out as the most powerful prohibitor of vascular calcification, provided that the body has sufficient Vitamin K2 to activate it. Unfortunately, with vitamin K2 being almost completely void from typical Western diets, it is no wonder most people have deficient or insufficient levels of vitamin K2.

The Clinically Proven Vitamin K2 as MK-7 for Heart Health

Enter MenaQ7®: the clinically proven Vitamin K2 as MK-7. Our pioneering studies – randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials – have demonstrated the remarkable benefits of MenaQ7®. One groundbreaking study, over the course of three years, showed that daily consumption of a nutritional dose of 180 mcg of MenaQ7® inhibited age-related arterial stiffening and improved arterial elasticity — a key aspect of maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system.

MenaQ7 study with children

45 mcg per day of vitamin K2 was shown to support the needs of healthy bones in children

Growing Strong Bones

Childhood is the most essential period for developing and building healthy bone mass.
However, research shows children have 8 to 10 times higher levels of inactive osteocalcin, which means they are not optimally building the bone mass they require during this period.[3]

In turn, today we see an increase in low-energy fractures in children. Thankfully there is a way to mitigate this situation.

Studies show that children who have optimal levels of Vitamins K2 and D3 have fewer bone fractures than children with lower status of these two vitamins. [4,5]

MenaQ7® is the only Vitamin K2 on the market proven to benefit bone health in children.

MenaQ7® study show

180 mcg per day of vitamin K2 maintain bone health in postmenopausal women

Well-Being in Times of Change

It is well recognized that women approaching and going through menopause are prone to develop weaker bones.

During this period, hormonal changes lower oestrogen levels, leading to bone loss and increased fracture risk.

Compromised bone health is estimated to affect 200 million women worldwide. Supporting bone health in women during this period of life is growing in importance, particularly as an ageing population seeks to maintain their quality of life.

The combination of Vitamins K2 and D3 is shown to have a more beneficial effect on this demographic’s bone strength than either vitamin taken alone.[5]

MenaQ7® is the only clinically proven K2 to deliver on the promise of maintaining bone health in postmenopausal women.[2]

Supporting Mothers for Healthy Babies

Pregnancy is a time of extraordinary change and the WHO estimates 20-30% of pregnant women suffer from some kind of vitamin deficiency. Post-natal supplements are important for many women during this period of their lives to ensure not only their health, but their babies as well.

In particular, pregnant women are advised to increase their calcium levels to support the growing babies’ bone and teeth – and to maintain the mothers own bone mass, which is depleted during pregnancy and nursing.

Research shows that women's bone metabolic status significantly changes over the period between pregnancy and during nursing [6], and as much as 50% of newborns are K deficient. Incorporating Vitamins K2 with D3 in post-natal supplements would benefit both mother and child through their combined optimization of calcium.

MenaQ7® study show

180 mcg per day is beneficial for bone and cardiovascular health.

Do What You Love Longer!

Calcification is believed to be an inevitable and unfortunate result of aging, but studies show that arterial calcification is, in fact, an actively regulated process where Vitamins K2 and D3 play a critical role.

In 2020 the ageing population (people over the age of 65) grew to approximately 727 million. Supporting bone and heart health is vitalto ensure quality of life as we age.

A 2013 study [8] evaluating the cardiovascular effect of Vitamin K2 (MenaQ7®) plus Vitamin D or Vitamin D alone showed more beneficial results when the two nutrients were combined than when D was taken alone.

MenaQ7® is the only clinically Vitamin K2 as MK-7 proven to reduce arterial stiffness in adult populations.[9]

Active Lifestylers

The bone and joint market is still expected to be driven by aging populations, but trends like Healthy Aging and Fitter for Longer open the market for younger demographics. Since 2000, views have drastically evolved about the importance of staying active and the role bone/joint health plays in one’s ability to do so.

Bone fractures are an obvious hindrance to staying active. In fact, every 3rd woman and every 5th man over the age of 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures. It is also worth noting that young female athletes have higher fracture risks than male counterparts.

Knowing the intricate balance between Vitamins D3 and K2, and its combined benefits for bone and heart health, a product that aims to support active lifestylers should incorporate both.
