Oral Anticoagulants
Oral anticoagulation therapy aims to control blood clotting by interfering with the vitamin K cycle in the liver. Such treatment is instituted by medical experts and followed up by the patient’s primary care facilities. Responsible, qualified medical personnel control this medication regularly. Consuming excess or uncontrolled amounts of vitamin K may interfere with the dose of drugs needed to control coagulation properly.
Warning
Present studies show that 45 mcg of MK-7 from MenaQ7® daily is not likely to interfere with blood-thinning medicines.42 However, individuals using warfarin/coumarins should consult their physicians regarding the simultaneous use of vitamin K rich foods or supplements. New knowledge points to the fact that arterial calcification seems to develop more readily in patients receiving oral anticoagulant treatment (OAC) such as warfarin/coumarins. In addition there also seems to be a link between arterial calcification and poor bone health43-55, as these medicines inhibit the action of K vitamins in the body.
